The MRC has published a booklet entitled 'The Brain', targetted at the general public. This booklet explores what the brain is, how it works, and how MRC-funded research is helping us to understand more about it. Unit members can obtain printed copies from the Unit reception. Miss Alessia Manganaro has joined the group of Jozsef Csicsvari as an MRC-funded DPhil student.Alessia obtained her BSc in the University of Palermo and MSc in Neurosciences in the University of Florence.
Ruth has joined Jeff McIlhinney's lab as an MRC-funded DPhil student. Ruth holds a BSc in Neuroscience from UCL, where she carried out her final year dissertation at the Institute of Neurology, concentrating on the role of microglial activation in neuroinflammatory disease. Last year Ruth successfully completed the MSc in Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, where she initially joined Jeff's lab in order to carry out her thesis on the expression and distribution of Copine-6 in brain during development.
Unit senior scientists David Dupret and Marco Capogna, and Unit D.Phil. student Colin McNamara, all enthusiastically served on the MRC stand at the Cheltenham Science Festival this year, which ran from 2nd to 7th June. The Unit team were joined by many other MRC-funded staff and students from across the UK, and all were ably coordinated by Erika Doyle from MRC Harwell. With a very large number of visitors, the festival attendance reached another record high.
Unit Programme Leader David Dupret, Investigator Scientist Tim Viney, D.Phil. Students Abhilasha Joshi and Eszter Korman, and Visiting Students Alison Comrie and Minas Salib, all enthusiastically served on the MRC stand at the Oxfordshire Science Festival held in Oxford's Bonn Square on Saturday 7th March 2015. The Unit crew was joined by many other MRC-funded staff and students from MRC Harwell. This year, the Unit team led several interactive displays with a special emphasis on brain plasticity, dementia and memory disorders.
We are pleased to welcome Mr. Adam Tudor Jones to the Unit. Adam has joined the Magill Group as an MRC-funded D.Phil. student and will study the functional organization of the basal ganglia and related thalamocortical circuits using advanced electrophysiological and anatomical techniques. Adam has just successfully completed a M.Sc. in Neuroscience at University College London, where his research project focussed on presynaptic NMDA receptors in cells impinging on cortical interneurons in the primary visual cortex.
